| Project Description: During our employment with Summit
Engineering we were fortunate to have the opportunity to design the new
head quarters facility of Appalachian Wireless. They wanted a facility
that would reflect an appropriate image of their company.
Technology, sophistication, energy efficiency, and economy were all frequently discussed during the design process. Most important was creating a place that employees would enjoy going to work. Also important was the desire to produce a building that fit in its surrounding environment and defied negative stereotypes about Appalachia. We believe we were successful in providing an architectural design that satisfies all of these client driven aims. Much effort also went into producing an energy efficient project. Through the use of Building Information Modeling and solar studies, shading devices for controlling unwanted summer gain could be tested and coordinated with efforts to soak up solar heat gain during winter months. These studies also virtually eliminated the need for window blinds to control glare while allowing plenty natural daylight and views of the surrounding hillsides and sky. It was with this project that we began our commitment to sustainable design. We were very pleased to learn that it has been recognized in the 2006 design awards issue of Metal Architecture magazine, August, page 55. We would like to thank everyone at Appalachian Wireless, as well as the consultants and contractors that made this project so successful. |
